Ecuadorean presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio shot dead


The late Ecuadorean presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was shot dead following a campaign rally in the capital, Quito, which led to the killing of a suspect who died of injuries sustained during a shootout, the country’s president Guillermo Lasso confirmed on Wednesday. Villavicencio, 59, was shot after a campaign event in Quito. Nine other people were injured during the attack, including a candidate for the legislature and two police officers. Villavicencio was a well-known critic of former President Rafael Correa and was sentenced to 18 months in prison for defamation over statements against the latter.
